International TÜV Rheinland Global Compact Award

The International TÜV Rheinland Global Compact Award, which is awarded every three years by the TÜV Rheinland Foundation, sends out a clear signal for the promotion of the goals of the United Nations Global Compact - as listed in the purpose of the articles of association. The globally unique award was established by the TÜV Rheinland Foundation in 2008 with the support of the United Nations General Secretariat.

The International TÜV Rheinland Global Compact Award evolved from the International Rheinland Award for Environmental Protection, which the TÜV Rheinland Foundation has presented since 1974. While the Environmental Award clearly focused on appreciating commitment to environmental protection, the International TÜV Rheinland Global Compact Award takes this a step further by adopting the goals of the UN Global Compact as its model. The International Network is actively committed to advancing the ideas of the United Nations, which, in addition to environmental protection, advocate principles on human rights, labor rights, children's rights and anti-corruption.

TÜV Rheinland has been a supporter of the UN Global Compact since 2006 in order to promote sustainable development in society and business worldwide. Awarding the International TÜV Rheinland Global Compact Award is another important step in taking responsibility and at the same time appreciating personalities who are intensively committed to sustainable development. Professor Dr.-Ing. Bruno O. Braun, Chairman of the Executive Board of the TÜV Rheinland Foundation: "The goals of the Global Compact for more sustainability in society and business have not lost any of their relevance or urgency. It takes outstanding personalities and diverse initiatives to bring these principles to people's awareness and to social, corporate and political action."

History: The Rheinland Award for Environmental Protection

The International Rheinland Award for Environmental Protection has been awarded by the TÜV Rheinland Foundation since 1974 and was merged into the International TÜV Rheinland Global Compact Award in 2008. The aim of the Rheinland Award was to recognize and promote outstanding technical, scientific and political achievements in environmental protection. The award winners were accordingly deserving personalities in this field at international level. The 13 recipients of the €15,000 prize included pioneers in environmental protection. They included, for example, Germany's first Environment Minister and former Director of the UN Environment Program Professor Klaus Töpfer, the former Environment Minister of Luxembourg Joseph "Josy" Barthel and the US environmental researcher Dr. Aary Jan Haagen-Smit.
