Emission Measurements

Emission measurements | TÜV Rheinland

Reliable monitoring of your emissions by our experts

One of the main environmental protection goals is to eliminate harmful emissions or reduce them as much as possible. These include gaseous and particulate pollutant emissions from chimneys, odor emissions, and particulate emissions from landfills. Benefit from our emission measurements for your plants, and actively contribute to protecting the environment.

Note: For example according to the German Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG), operators of plants that require approval are under obligation to determine the type and extent of emissions emitted by their plants. Our emission measurements and tests enable you to demonstrate compliance with the regulatory requirements.

Inspection of your plants in accordance with the German BImSchG and the TA Luft

From large combustion plants to biogas plants, from waste incineration plants to crematoriums – our experts will inspect your plant in accordance with §§ 26 and 28 of the German Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG) and the Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control (TA-Luft). In addition, we will assist you with exhaust gas measurements, with the reduction of odor nuisance and pollutant emissions as well as with system upgrades.

Most plants that are subject to monitoring in Germany fall under the scope of the Federal Immission Control Act Ordinances (BImSchVs) or under the Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control. Typically, these plants fall under:

  • 13th BImSchV
Ordinance on Large Combustion Plants, Gas Turbine Plants, and Internal Combustion Engine Plants
  • 17th BImSchV
Ordinance on the Incineration and Co-Incineration of Waste
  • 27th BImSchV
    Ordinance on Cremation Facilities
  • 30th BImSchV
Ordinance on Installations for the Biological Treatment of Waste
  • 31st BImSchV
Ordinance on the Limitation of Emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds during the Use of Organic Solvents in Certain Installations
  • 44th BImSchV
Ordinance on Medium-Sized Combustion, Gas Turbine and Internal Combustion Engine Plants
  • TA Luft
Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control

The relatively new 44th BImSchV Ordinance now regulates medium-sized combustion plants, which were previously only covered by the TA Luft or did not require an approval under the BImSchG. For operators of such plants, which also include emergency power generators, this entails registration obligations, new measurement obligations and revised limit values.

Benefit from our services for your emission measurements

Our expert auditors will come to your premises, conduct emission measurements on site, analyze the results at our laboratory and prepare a report for submission to the authorities.

Discover our range of services:

  • Emission measurements according to TA Luft and BImSchVs for systems that require approval
  • Functional testing and calibration – AST and QAL2 as per EN 14181 (and VDI3950) – of automated measuring systems for continuous exhaust gas monitoring
  • Determination of the correct installation site for continuous sampling, comparative measurements, and preparation of installation certificates
  • Development of concepts for measuring and monitoring combustion temperatures in the combustion chamber of waste incineration plants
  • Testing and parameterization of systems for data acquisition, data analysis and data transfer to the authorities as part of remote emission monitoring (emission analyzer)
  • Determination of installation sites and measuring points for comparative measurements as per DIN EN 15259 (VDI 4200)
  • Concepts for monitoring exhaust gas parameters and process parameters
  • In-house measurements, for example for plant optimization
  • Assessment, measurement, and consultation on process technologies for waste gas purification and their state of technology
  • Measurement and monitoring of material flows and trace substances of any kind; assessments for acceptance tests and preparation of heat and material balances
  • Measurement of odors, odorant dispersion and predictions; advice on mitigation measures

Drawing on their many years of experience, our experts will analyze your processes and identify potentials for optimization. Thanks to our nationwide approval as a measuring body, we are authorized to conduct the legally required measurements for you.

Measuring emissions, protecting the environment, improving the climate

Emission measurement – TÜV Rheinland's experts measure the substances and gases emitted by your plant.
We measure the following substances and gases emitted by your plant, and more.

With our emission measurements, you actively contribute to protecting the environment. That’s because knowing your actual emissions provides a starting point for reducing air, soil and water pollution, for protecting people from exposure and for improving the climate.

Another plus: By having your emissions measured, you create the foundation for a smooth and therefore economical plant operation.

Benefit from our experience in emission monitoring and measurement

As a registered measuring body in Germany and internationally accredited according to ISO 17025, we can carry out the legally required emission tests on your plants. Our experts select the appropriate method for each measurement and coordinate the measurement planning with you. We support you not only throughout Germany, but also beyond.

Trust our many years of experience and let us conduct your in-house measurements as well.

Expansion of our portfolio to include environmental and specialized analysis

The requirements regarding air pollution control, environmental protection and health protection are evolving dynamically and increasingly permeate our everyday lives and our economy. To meet the growing requirements, we have strengthened our expertise in the field of specialized analysis. In addition to the analysis of routine parameters, we are developing new analytical methods tailored to your specific challenges. One of the topics currently under discussion, for example, are perfluorinated and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFAS).
