USA - Intention to List Three Chemical Substances Under Proposition 65
The California Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) intends to list coal-tar pitch, fluoro-edenite fibrous amphibole, and silicon carbide whiskers as known to the state to cause cancer under the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986.
Coal-tar pitch is mainly used in electrode manufacture, roofing and paving.
There is no information showing the uses and application of fluoro-edenite fibrous amphibole. However, there is sufficient evidence in humans that exposure to fluoro-edenite fibrous amphibole causes mesothelioma, and sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals.
Silicon carbide whiskers are used as reinforcement materials for ceramics, metals and plastics.
The comment period is open until October 23, 2023.
