US - OEHHA Listed Three Carcinogens under the Proposition 65
Effective November 17, 2023, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) is adding coal-tar pitch, fluoro-edenite fibrous amphibole, and silicon carbide whiskers to the list of chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer under the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986.
Coal-tar pitch is mainly used in electrode manufacture, roofing and paving.
There is no information showing the uses and application of fluoro-edenite fibrous amphibole. However, there is sufficient evidence in humans that exposure to fluoro-edenite fibrous amphibole causes mesothelioma, and sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals.
Silicon carbide whiskers are used as reinforcement materials for ceramics, metals and plastics.
The warning requirement for significant exposures to these two chemicals will take effect after one year, which is November 17, 2024.
