Australia - Mandatory Standards on Infant Products
Recently Australia published 2 mandatory standards on infant products, namely:
- Consumer Goods (Infant Sleep Products) Safety Standard 2024, which has a commencement date of July 19, 2024 and a transition period of 18 months.
- Consumer Goods (Infant Products) Information Standard 2024, with a commencement date of January 19, 2026.
The mandatory safety standard applies to infant sleep products - i.e. products that are designed and marketed for use by an infant for the purpose of sleep. They include products that soothe or settle an infant, and have a surface on which a baby may sleep. Where certain inclined products are designed and marketed for use by an infant for the purpose of sleep, they are also infant sleep products.
The mandatory information standard applies to all infant sleep products as well as products designed for infants that have an inclined surface on which an infant may lie, even if they are not designed or marketed for infant sleep.
The mandatory standards do not apply to:
- accessories that attach to or are used with infant sleep products
- products that are regulated by other safety or information standards like car seats, prams and strollers
- medical devices under the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989
- products designed to carry a baby on the body of a carrier or parent like a carrier, wrap or sling
- antique cots, collectable cots or second-hand goods (other than second-hand goods imported into Australia).
The mandatory safety standard applies to design, construction, performance and testing requirements for infant sleep products.
The mandatory information standard requires warnings and safety information on infant sleep products and inclined non-sleep products. This will provide consumers with important messaging on safe sleeping and product suitability.
