Overview:
The European Union is committed to reducing the consumption of natural resources by promoting the reuse of materials from waste, thereby fostering a circular economy. However, this endeavour faces challenges when critical ingredients hinder reuse. Presently, under Article 33 of the REACH regulation, it is obligated to disclose information within the supply chain and to consumers regarding articles containing over 0.1% of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). Addressing these challenges, the Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC (WFD) mandates that suppliers of articles must input SVHC information into the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) database.
TÜV Rheinland offers compliance solutions to assist companies in meeting their SCIP Database requirements in line with the Waste Framework Directive.
Empowering Sustainability:
The SCIP Database aims to enhance understanding of hazardous chemicals in articles and products across their lifecycle, including during waste management. It strives to diminish hazardous substances in waste, promote their substitution with safer alternatives, and advance the circular economy.
Suppliers are required to furnish:
- Information enabling item identification.
- Name, concentration range, and SVHC location in the article.
- Additional information on the item ‘s safe usage may be necessary.
The SCIP Database furnishes waste operators with insights into hazardous substances present in processed waste. This enables potential purification of material before recycling, fostering a truly sustainable and safe circular economy. Increased transparency regarding the presence of hazardous substance empowers consumers to make informed purchase decisions and guides them in utilizing and disposing of products responsibly.
Benefits of our Service Portfolio:
- SCIP Database improves waste management practices and encourages waste utilization as a resource.
- Consumers gain awareness of hazardous chemicals in products, empowering informed buyer decisions.
- Consumers advocate for their right to know about product hazards.
