Energy Labels for Heaters According to the Ecodesign Directive
The Ecodesign Directive provides a framework of the requirements for the environmental compatibility of energy-consuming products. This was defined with the Directive 2009/125/EC of the European Parliament and the Council. In 2013, an extension of the Ecodesign Directive for heaters came into effect after previous enhancements of pumps and air conditioning units. All manufacturers should meet the requirements and verify the energy label by September 2015.
The energy label specifies the heating capacity, efficiency class and sound power level as well as the energy consumption using a color scale from green (efficient) to red (wasteful). The Directive for Energy-related Products – ErP Directive - enables efficiency and emissions comparisons for different types of heaters (or “lots” of heater).

Product Groups
A summary of certain types of heaters in lots enables the comparability of energy efficiency.
- Lot 1: Boilers and combi heaters
- Lot 2: Water heaters
- Lot 15: Small heaters for solid fuel
- Lot 20: Single room heaters
- Lot 21: Warm air central heating (without CHP for central heating systems)
A distinction is made between individual heaters and complete systems. All individual heaters and systems with a heat output up to of 70 kW must be labeled with an ErP energy efficiency label. Systems must also have a "package label".
Energy Label
With regard to labels for refrigerators, washers or stoves, all heaters and energy-related products will have an energy label starting September 2015. The efficiency class is indicated by means of a scale. From 2015 to 2019, this will range from A ++ to G. Starting 2019, the scale will be moved higher to accommodate more economical heaters. This will range from A +++ to D.

Testing and laboratory services for heating appliances acc. to the Ecodesign directive
Oil and gas boilers, heating pumps, micro combined heat and power units, as well as storages must adhere to the Directive for Energy Related Products (ErP), also known as Ecodesign Directive, starting September 2015. From this point it will become obligatory to label all heating appliances and water heaters accordingly.
Our laboratories test whether your heating appliances meet the requirements of the Ecodesign Directive and whether they can be granted an energy label. After successful completion of the testing procedures, you will receive a certificate attesting the correctness of your energy label and its compliance with the regulations. This will allow you to place your heating appliances in the market.

Hot water appliances
Our test stand for energetic analysis of water heaters determines the amount of hot water used in an average household.
Our services:
The energy efficiency of the appliance is measured by simulating the daily hot water consumption of an average household.
Testing provided for:
Water heaters with load profiles 3XS to 4XL, such as:
- Electric and gas-fired hot water storages with a storage volume of up to 2000 l
- Dual fuel boilers of up to 70 kW
- Instantaneous water heaters of up to 30 kW

Domestic hot water heat pumps
This test stand simulates heat sources for heat pumps, in particular brine and water. One special feature of this test stand is its high temperature stability.

We measure the energy efficiency of the appliance by simulating the daily hot water consumption of an average household.

- Brine/Water/Air heat pumps of up to 20 kW

Heating appliances
Our fully automatic test stand for heating technologies is used for assessing the energy efficiency of heat pumps, boilers and micro combined heat and power units.
Our services:
We assess the efficiency for boilers, determine the coefficient of performance of heat pumps and measure the thermal efficiency of micro combined heat and power units.

- Heat pumps of up to 100 kW
- Boilers of up to 200 kW
- Micro combined heat and power units of up to 50 kW

Air source heat pumps
The energy efficiency of air source hot water heat pumps and heat pumps for space heating is determined at our test stand for heating technologies. Here, the heat source air is simulated by means of a climatic chamber ranging from -15 to 80 °C and with humidity levels of up to 95 %.

Hot water storage systems
Even during downtimes an instrument loses energy – e. g. due to emission (energy loss in kWd/d) into the environment. The fully automatic test stand for heating technologies is set up for detecting these downtime losses of storages.
