Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) for your products
Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) entry into force
The European Ecodesign Framework Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation) is published in the Official Journal of the European Union (EU) and entered into force on 18 July 2024. ESPR is a legislative framework under the European Green Deal and Circular Economy Action Plan. ESPR is intended to create sustainable product design across the EU, which significantly extends the Directive 2009/125/EC, the current Ecodesign Directive.
ESPR sets a new sustainability and ecodesign standard
Ecodesign is the integration of environmental sustainability considerations into the characteristics of a product and the processes taking place throughout the product’s value chain.
Ecodesign requirement is the performance requirement, or an information requirement aimed at making a product, including processes taking place throughout the product’s value chain, more environmentally sustainable.
Key takeaways for ESPR
- Broad Scope
Moving beyond energy related products to a wide product scope - New sustainability & Ecodesign aspects
Added performance requirements (e.g. reparability, durability, environmental footprint, recycled content, etc) - Horizonal measures
Common ecodesign requirements for products with similarities - Strong focus on product information
Digital Product Passport (DPP), labels & information requirements

Tentative timeline and milestones of ESPR implementation
The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is expected to be implemented in phases, with initial regulatory measures and guidelines being approved in July 2024. Full compliance and enforcement of the regulation across all relevant sectors are anticipated to be achieved by 2030.
Prepare your products to be ESPR compliant
- Understand the Regulation
Identify relevant products - Conduct Gap Analysis
Identify gaps (e.g. energy efficiency, material composition, recycling, lifespan, and environmental impact.) - Develop a Compliance Strategy
- Set targets and timeline
- Design and engineering (e.g. selecting sustainable materials, designing for disassembly, improving energy efficiency, and enhancing recyclability) - Implement Changes in Product Development
- Enhance Supply Chain Collaboration
- Work with suppliers - Testing and Verification
- Third-party testing: e.g. TÜV Rheinland to verify that your products meet ESPR standards
- Documentation - Train and Educate Your Team
- Marketing and Communication
- Marketing strategy and campaigns
- Product labeling and data transparency - Monitor and Improve Continuously
- Leverage External Expertise
