Eye Comfort Certification

Eye Comfort Certification

Eye protection and comfort with tested and certified quality displays

Eye Comfort Display
Display certification for low blue light, flicker free quality and reduction of reflections.

Rapid advances in display technology saw corresponding improvements in display quality in terms of pixel density, consistency, color gamut coverage, and refresh rate. At the same time, evolutionary improvements in the eye care dimension of display monitors saw the adoption of hardware low blue light technology to ensure color fidelity while reducing harmful blue light. DC modulation of LCD display backlighting helps to eliminate frequency flicker throughout the full range of brightness adjustments for effective mitigation of eye fatigue. Some studies have shown that color accuracy influences user comfort as well. Good color accuracy ensures consistency of color perception when the same content is shown on different devices. Higher refresh rates also make displays feel smoother. The reduction in streaking while watching videos, playing games, or browsing web content enhances visual comfort. The eye care concept must nevertheless continue to evolve to keep up with advances in IT products.

Key user pain points and expectation in digital items

  1. Image Quality
  2. Ambient Light Performance
  3. Visual Fatigue
  4. Improper Usage

Productive and profitable workspace with Eye Comfort certification 3.0

When TÜV Rheinland began promoting eye protection for the display market in 2014, it elevated the standard for displays from safety to eye care and helped vendors develop a wide variety of eye comfort displays. In addition to the successful of upgrading of industry technology, consumers now also have their displays to be better for health as well. In 2023, TÜV Rheinland upgrades the eye comfort certification for the display industry.

Eye protection displays often feature a variety of labels such as low blue-light, flicker-free, refresh rate, color gamut, color accuracy and ambient light management. The product certification marks of each display will vary depending on the brand and model as well. Display certifications generally highlight a certain technical attribute (e.g., hardware blue light protection) with keywords in the safety mark that emphasize what test was passed. The new Eye Comfort 3.0 certification mark from TÜV Rheinland offers a more consumer-friendly identification that emphasizes the overall eye care attributes. A more sophisticated technical assessment process provides consumers and buyers with indicators that are easier to judge.

Testing and certification of stationary and portable workspace displays

As the leading eye comfort certification provider, we conduct laboratory testing and certification of displays according to the ISO 9241-307 standard to eliminate annoying reflections, safeguard image quality from different perspectives, facilitate adjustable blue light content and ensure displays are flicker free.

Why is Eye Comfort Certification important?

An eye safe certification mark means that a product has undergone third-party testing showing that its blue light and flicker properties are all within a safe range so will not cause eye fatigue or harm. Consumers can therefore use the product without concern. Unlike past low blue light or flicker free marks however, eye care certification is a more holistic testing standard that encompasses a broader range of safety indicators. In the future, products should stay up to date on the latest eye care technology.

What are the benefits of Eye Comfort Certification?

The innovative tiered eye care certification system developed by TÜV Rheinland allows brand owners or consumers to find the right combination of product rating, cost, and performance through different star ratings.

Eye comfort certification helps brand with building trust and a reputation for safety. For display manufacturers, it is not just a marketing approach . It is also their responsibility on maintaining consumer health.

What products can apply for Eye Comfort certification?

The TÜV Rheinland Eye Comfort 3.0 star-ratings are mainly applicable to medium to high-end display monitors and notebooks.

What are the criteria being tested in Eye Comfort certification?

The star rating looks at 16 indicators in 6 technical dimensions and they are lited below

  • Ambient Light Management
  • Color Accuracy
  • Color Gamut
  • Refresh Rate
  • Flicker Free
  • Low Blue Light

How Ambient Light Management is being evaluated in Eye Comfort Certification?

Ambient Light Management is a feature that adjusts screen brightness and CCT based on surrounding lighting conditions. It plays a significant role in reducing eye strain and fatigue. This, in turn, contributes to a healthier and more comfortable visual experience for individuals.

Factors considered includes Brightness Control, Contrast Enhancement, Glare Reduction, Blue Light Exposure, etc.

How Color Accuracy is being evaluated in Eye Comfort Certification?

Color accuracy refers to the representations of the original content or the intended color values. It is important to monitor eye comfort because our eyes are sensitive to variations in color and can perceive even slight discrepancies.

Factors considered includes Natural Perception, Visual Consistency, Color Contrast and Readability, Visual Harmony, etc.

How Color Gamut is being evaluated in Eye Comfort Certification?

Color gamut refers to the range of colors that a monitor can display. It is important to monitor eye comfort because it directly affects the range and accuracy of colors that can be displayed on a screen or in a visual medium.

Factors considered includes Realism and Immersion, Accuracy of Color Representation, Contrast and Visual Hierarchy, Color Harmony, and Aesthetics, etc.

How Refresh Rate is being evaluated in Eye Comfort Certification?

Refresh Rate is the number of times per second the monitor updates the image on the screen, measured in Hertz (Hz). It is important to monitor eye comfort because it affects the smoothness and stability of visuals on a display.

Factors considered includes Reduced Eye Strain, Flicker Reductions, Improved Motion Clarity, Gaming and Responsiveness, Eye Comfort Customization, etc

How Flicker Free is being evaluated in Eye Comfort Certification?

Flickers refers to the rapid and repeated changes in brightness and is typically caused by the modulation of backlight intensity. It is important for monitoring eye comfort because it helps reduce eye strain and fatigue caused by the perception of flickering light.

Factors considered includes Minimizes Eye Strain, Prevents headaches and Migraines, Improves Visual Stability, Enhances Readability, Suitable for sensitive Individuals, etc.

How Low Blue Light is being evaluated in Eye Comfort Certification?

Blue light is a short-wavelength, high energy light that is part of the visible light spectrum. Low Blue Light is important for monitoring eye comfort because it helps reduce eye strain, minimize potential sleep disruptions, and mitigate the potential negative effects of blue light exposure.

Factors considered includes Reduced Eye Strain, Sleep Regulation, Protection against potential risks, Visual Comfort and Clarity, etc.

How can I find Eye Comfort Certified devices?

Star-rated products can be looked up in Certipedia, the TÜV Rheinland certification database. Manufacturers and consumers alike can see what the star rating means for the product. Once and again, buyers and consumers can review product compliance by scanning the QR code on the certification label.
