USA - New York bans PFAS in carpets
New York prohibits the use of PFAS in carpet and requires carpet manufacturers to affix a labelling on their products (A9279A).
The bill A9279 / S5027 sets both labelling and restriction requirements of PFAS in carpets as well as a carpet collection program (as an extended producer responsibility).
The carpet producers have to affix a label on the products with the following information on and after one year after a carpet collection program is approved by the Department pursuant to section 27-3309:
- name of the producer and contact information
- carpet material, composition and type of construction
And the sale of carpets is prohibited if it contains PFAS substances for any purposes from December 31, 2024.
Carpet, e.g. a commercial or residential broadllom carpet, modular carpet tiles, artificial turf, a pad or underlayment used in conjunction with a carpet, etc but excluding handmade rugs, area rugs, or mats.
