USA - Michigan Proposed to Ban PFAS and Other Chemicals in Food Packaging

Michigan introduced a bill (SB 327) on May 4 regarding the prohibition of certain chemicals in food packaging. In the proposal, it restricts food packaging that has been treated with direct fluorination or to which PFAS, bisphenols, or phthalates have been intentionally added in any amount greater than an incidental presence from January 1, 2025.

Food packaging means a container or wrapper that provides a means of marketing, protecting, or handling a food that is intended for direct food contact. Food packaging includes, but not limited to, an unsealed receptacle, such as a carrying case, crate, cup, pail, rigid foil or other tray, wrapping film, bag, or tub as well as food packaging for containing food, e.g. a plastic, disposable glove used in commercial or institutional food service.
