USA - CPSC Approves New Federal Safety Standard for Infant Support Cushions to Prevent Infant Deaths and Serious Injuries
USA Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has approved a new federal mandatory standard to enhance the safety of infant support cushions, addressing risks of suffocation, entrapment, and falls. The new rule will take effect 180 days after its publication in the Federal Register.
It mandates that all infant support cushions manufactured for sale after this date adhere to new performance standards.
These standards include firmness testing, sidewall angle testing, a maximum incline of 10 degrees, prohibition of infant restraints, and strong, conspicuous warning labels.
Key recommendations for safer use of infant support cushions include:
- Never using them for infant sleep or naps.
- Supervising infants during use.
- Using the cushions only on the floor, avoiding beds, sofas, or other raised or soft surfaces.
The safest place for a baby to sleep remains a flat, bare surface such as a crib, bassinet, or play yard.
The rule is effective on May 5, 2025.
