France - Order on the Ban of Use of Mineral Oils in Packaging and Printed Materials Distributed to the Public

In 2019, the European Parliament and Council adopted the Single-Use Plastics (SUP) Directive (EU) 2019/904 on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment.
The Directive implements the EU’s plastic strategy and aims to “promote the EU’s transition to a circular economy”. It restricts as from July 3, 2021, various single-use plastic products, which are considered the most found in marine litter.

The order was published on May 3, 2022, this prohibition applies to mineral oils containing substances that interfere with waste recycling or limiting the use of recycled materials because of the risks they pose to human health. This order specifies the substances thus concerned, based on the ANSES opinion of March 8, 2017 on the migration of mineral oil compounds into foodstuffs from recycled paper and cardboard packaging.

Entry into force: January 1, 2023.
