EU - The Commission Adopted The New Limit For HBCDD Under POP Regulation

The EU Commission proposed to lower the limit of Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) (included in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2019/1021) in December last year. It amends the limit value for the presence of HBCDD as an unintentional trace contaminant in substances, mixtures and articles, lowering from 100 mg/kg to 75 mg/kg. However, for the use of recycled polystyrene in the production of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation material for use in buildings or civil engineering works is exempted and the limit is kept at < 100 mg/kg. This shall be reviewed and assessed by the Commission by January 1, 2026.

Based on the latest news, the Commission adopted the proposal on March 21, 2024.
