TÜV Rheinland and SID China Jointly Launch Expert Working Groups for Sustainability and Testing in Display Industry

Greater China | 22 July, 2024

Recently, TÜV Rheinland Greater China, an international independent third-party testing, inspection, and certification organization, and the Society for Information Display China (SID China) jointly initiated the formation of two expert working groups: the "Display Industry Carbon Emission Analysis and Calculation Methodology Working Group" and the "Independent Third-Party Testing Laboratory Working Group."

In April, TÜV Rheinland and SID China established a strategic partnership. The joint launch of these sustainability and testing-related working groups aims to bring together industry experts' wisdom and strength to advance fundamental research and technical exchange, providing targeted solutions for the display industry's development and guiding the industry towards scientific, standardized, and green growth.

Promoting Sustainable Development in the Global Display Industry

With increasing global awareness of environmental protection, the display industry also faces pressure regarding environmental protection and carbon reduction. Many international end-user companies have already imposed strict carbon emission requirements on their suppliers. To scientifically and systematically analyze and assess carbon emissions in the display industry chain, TÜV Rheinland and SID China jointly established the "Display Industry Carbon Emission Analysis and Calculation Methodology Working Group." This group will establish a comprehensive and systematic methodology for carbon emission analysis and calculation, helping the industry chain effectively reduce carbon emissions, thereby promoting the green and low-carbon transformation of the global display industry and achieving sustainable development.

The carbon emissions of the display industry chain involve multiple stages, including raw materials and equipment, display panels, production and manufacturing of end products, transportation logistics and warehousing, and disposal of products after use.

The working group will bring together experts in carbon emission calculation, environmental science, materials, equipment, display technology, display panel production and operation, and display production plant construction and maintenance. Through literature review and data analysis, they will establish carbon emission calculation methods and models, data sampling analysis, and testing systems for the upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors of the display industry chain. Additionally, the group will collaborate with companies across the industry chain to explore emission reduction solutions. The research results will be compiled into a white paper; the working group will also participate in formulating relevant industry standards and support their implementation and promotion to enhance the overall low-carbon and environmental protection level of the industry.

Advancing Technological Progress and Healthy Development in the Display Industry

As display products become widely used, consumers have higher demands for their performance, visual health, user experience, and safety. As a global leading technical service provider, TÜV Rheinland has been committed to providing technical solutions for quality evaluation and user experience issues in the display industry's development through industry-academia-research cooperation. In the field of visual health, SID is dedicated to building an exchange and cooperation platform integrating display systems, application integrators, panel manufacturing enterprises, and medical experts to optimize display visual experience and visual health. The joint establishment of the "Independent Third-Party Testing Laboratory Working Group" by TÜV Rheinland and SID China aims to establish a fair and transparent testing system to scientifically evaluate and verify product quality and performance, promoting technological progress and healthy development in the display industry.

The working group members include experts in display technology, human factors engineering, and visual health. They will conduct human factors and visual health and display quality testing, establish related testing and certification systems to enhance product recognition. The working group will also participate in drafting industry standards and writing white papers, promoting the transformation and application of relevant test results, thereby improving the overall product quality and performance level of the industry.

TÜV Rheinland has been deeply involved in the display field for decades, offering safety, quality, performance, user experience, and sustainability-related standards and certification services for various products, which have been widely recognized by the industry. SID, with over 60 years of history, is an authoritative global professional academic and technical organization in the display industry; SID China, as the only overseas operational entity of SID outside the United States, aims to promote the development of display technology and industry.

In the future, TÜV Rheinland and SID China will actively advance the research and promotion work of the "Display Industry Carbon Emission Analysis and Calculation Methodology Working Group" and the "Independent Third-Party Testing Laboratory Working Group." Industry experts are sincerely invited to join the working groups and contribute to the high-quality, sustainable development of the display industry.
