TÜV Rheinland Expert Appointed to the New Validation Council of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)

Greater China | 26 June, 2024

Fallight Xu, General Manager of Sustainability Services at TÜV Rheinland Greater China

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) recently announced the establishment of its Validation Council, an independent decision-making council responsible for overseeing target validation decision-making. It exists to ensure decisions regarding validation are made separately and independently from the SBTi's standard-setting. The Validation Council is appointed to balance interest, representation, geography and expertise on greenhouse gas accounting and SBTi conformity assessment. Fallight Xu, General Manager of Sustainability Services at TÜV Rheinland Greater China, has been appointed as one of the five members of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Validation Council. These members are selected from around the world to oversee decisions within the validation services.

The SBTi is a corporate climate action organization that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis. SBTi develops standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set GHG emissions reduction targets in line with what is needed to limit global warming and reach net-zero by 2050 at the latest. The SBTi was formed as a collaboration between World Resources Institute, CDP, the United Nations Global Compact and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). In 2023, it was incorporated as a charity in the United Kingdom.

Fallight Xu expressed, "I am extremely honored to be part of the Validation Council of the SBTi. Currently, over 130 countries and regions worldwide have set net-zero emission targets, and China is at a critical stage of focusing on carbon reduction as a key strategic direction in its ecological civilization construction. As an international third-party testing and certification organization with over 150 years of history, TÜV Rheinland continues to delve deeply into the fields of low carbon, energy, and sustainable development. In the future, we will continue to collaborate with the SBTi and more like-minded partners to assist enterprises in their green and low-carbon transformation and upgrading, actively exploring innovative pathways and best practices for sustainable development, and contributing to the achievement of the 'dual carbon' goals."

As a global leader in technical services, TÜV Rheinland has been providing green solutions to clients focused on energy conservation, environmental protection, and carbon reduction since 2010. Recognized and authorized by the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS), the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), the German Emissions Trading Authority (DEHSt), and the Taiwan Accreditation Foundation (TAF), TÜV Rheinland offers greenhouse gas audit and verification services across various industries including automotive, chemical, photovoltaic, electronics, real estate, battery, and building materials. These services encompass energy and carbon emission data collection, modeling, quantification metrics, and assessment across the entire lifecycle, from raw materials, design, and development, through the production process to product recycling.

In recent years, TÜV Rheinland has conducted greenhouse gas inventories for enterprises based on the SBTi guidance framework, providing technical support and jointly exploring SBTi-compliant carbon reduction pathways to address climate change. Additionally, in the field of sustainable development, TÜV Rheinland's services include organizational greenhouse gas emissions accounting and verification, product carbon footprint calculation, net-zero carbon building certification, green product certification, zero waste to landfill certification, and ESG report assurance.
