TÜV Rheinland Supports Flairmicro in Achieving NG eCall Certification

Greater China | 03 February, 2025

TÜV Rheinland Greater China, an international independent third-party testing, inspection, and certification organization, has supported Flaircomm Microelectronics, Inc. (hereafter "Flairmicro”) in securing Next Generation eCall (NG eCall) certification for its T-Box product. This certification, based on up-to-date EU Regulation 2015/758, is a significant milestone for Flairmicro, following their receipt of the first EU eCall certificate in China in 2019. The NG eCall certificate was issued by the Ministry of Transport of Luxembourg (SNCH).

The vehicle emergency call system (eCall) plays a crucial role in traffic safety. In the event of an accident, the system establishes a connection with the nearest emergency center via the operator network and satellite positioning. It then transmits a Minimum Set of Data (MSD) containing key information such as the accident location and vehicle details, enabling quick assistance and minimizing accident-related damage. As per EU vehicle certification requirements, since April 1, 2018 it has been obligatory for all M1 and N1 category vehicles exported to the EU in large series to be equipped with an eCall system compliant with EU Regulation 2015/758.

On February 14, 2024, EU Regulation 2024/1180 was introduced, establishing a transition to the Next Generation eCall system (NG eCall), as outlined below:

  • January 1, 2025: Member state transport ministries can begin certifying eCall components, systems, and vehicles that meet 4G/5G standards.
  • January 1, 2026: Certification will be denied for eCall components, systems, and vehicles that do not meet 4G/5G requirements, including both new applications and extensions of existing certificates.
  • January 1, 2027: Vehicles previously certified that do not meet 4G/5G standards will no longer be allowed to be registered or sold.

The key advantages of NG eCall over the previous system are its enhanced transmission capabilities, which allow for faster and more detailed transmission of data in the event of an emergency. Traditional eCall was limited by a 140-byte data capacity, restricting the amount of information that could be sent to emergency responders. With NG eCall this limitation is removed, enabling the transmission of detailed accident location data, vehicle information, and even real-time data on the severity of the incident. This advancement significantly accelerates emergency response times, improving rescue efforts and saving lives.

TÜV Rheinland, with its deep expertise in vehicle safety and certification, played a critical role in verifying the compliance of Flairmicro’s T-Box product with the new EU regulations. This successful certification reflects TÜV Rheinland’s ongoing commitment to supporting manufacturers as they navigate the complexities of evolving global safety standards.
