TÜV Rheinland Hong Kong Appointed as Third-Party Certification Body for "Type H" Workshops Under New EV Maintenance Scheme
Hong Kong | 08 November, 2024
TÜV Rheinland Hong Kong (TRHK) proudly announces its appointment as a Third-Party Certification Body for “Type H” Workshops under the newly introduced scheme by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD). This significant development is part of the EMSD’s Voluntary Registration Scheme for Vehicle Maintenance Workshops, specifically targeting electric vehicle (EV) maintenance.
EMSD announced on July 22, 2024, the introduction of EV maintenance services to the Voluntary Registration Scheme for Vehicle Mechanics and the Voluntary Registration Scheme for Vehicle Maintenance Workshops. This new initiative aims to ensure that workshops specializing in high-voltage EV maintenance meet stringent safety and quality standards. Certified “Type H” workshops will be authorized to perform a range of high-voltage EV maintenance services, including diagnosis, testing, maintenance, dismantling, and installation of high-voltage EV systems and components, as well as the replacement of fixed on-board power batteries. This certification ensures safety protocols are in place to mitigate unique occupational hazards associated with high-voltage electrical systems. The goal is to enhance overall safety, reliability, and transparency in the EV maintenance sector, build consumer trust in EV maintenance services, support the sustainable growth of the EV market in Hong Kong, and foster a safe working environment for EV maintenance professionals.
Only workshops that are already registered under the existing Voluntary Registration Scheme for Vehicle Maintenance Workshops can apply to become “Type H” workshops. These workshops must employ at least one full-time technician certified in high-voltage electric vehicle maintenance. Additionally, the workshop must comply with specific facility and equipment standards, including having designated areas for high-voltage work to prevent unauthorized access and ensure safety. The facility must be equipped with appropriate safety gear and tools, such as insulated gloves, protective clothing, and proper diagnostic equipment. Workshops must also implement rigorous safety protocols, including proper isolation procedures for high-voltage systems, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and emergency response plans, supervised by certified technicians.
