Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth
The US STURDY (Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth) Act mandates, that each clothing storage unit shall comply with ASTM F2057-23 Standard Safety Specification for Clothing Storage Units. The US CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) is responsible for implementing and enforcing this Act.
By the definition of clothing storage unit, it refers to furniture item with drawers and/or hinged doors intended for the storage of clothing typical with bedroom furniture and meets all of the following criteria:
• Free-standing
• Height of at least 27 inches
• Mass of at least 30 pounds
• Enclosed storage volume of at least 3.2 cubic feet
This safety specification is intended to reduce injuries and deaths of children from hazards associated with tip over of free-standing clothing storage units.
Test methods in this safety specification are intended to simulate the reaction of a clothing storage unit on carpet, loaded drawers, multiple open drawers, and a dynamic force from possible interaction of a child up to 72 months. Upon successful testing and depending on the product, a GCC (General Certificate of Conformity) or a CPC (Children's Product Certificate) needs to be issued by the importer/manufacturer.
