South Africa - Pressure Equipment Regulations (PER)

Importers of pressure equipment have a number of obligations and legal responsibilities with which they must comply. In order to import products to South Africa it is mandatory to perform a conformity assessment review for equipment working at or above 0.5 kPa, in accordance with the Pressure Equipment Regulations, 2009 (PER) and South African National Standard (SANS) 347:2012. SANS 347 is a national standard which is mandated in the PER and is used to ensure technical compliance to the regulatory obligations, which includes hazard categorisation and conformity assessment requirements. According to SANS 347:2012 all reviews of pressure vessels, steam generators and assemblies must be verified by an Approved Inspection Authority (AIA) – except where manufactured in accordance with sound engineering practice (SEP) and category 1. In order to verify the conformity assessment made on your pressure equipment we make the following checks: Is the code of design and manufacturing listed in Annex A of SANS 347?Is the inspection authority, who certified the pressure equipment produced by the manufacturer, accredited for the type of assessment performed?Does the nameplate comply to the PER requirements?Is there a declaration of conformity and other related documents?Was the equipment categorised and conformity assed in accordance to SANS 347?For assemblies is there a global conformity assessment?
