European Union - (EU) 'Directive 2014/53 on .. Radio Equipment' (RED)

Prove compliance of your Radio Equipment with EU Directive 2014/53 and enter the European Union market

The European Union (EU) ‘Directive 2014/53 on the harmonization of the laws of the Member States relating to the making available on the market of radio equipment’ establishes rules for equipment which intentionally emits or receives radio waves for the purpose of radio communication or radiodetermination by systematic use of radio spectrum*. Exemptions from the scope of this directive are listed in Annex I, such as e.g. specific radio equipment used by radio amateurs (unless the equipment is made available on the market) or specific marine equipment. According to Article 3 ‘Essential Requirements’, radio equipment shall be constructed so as to ensure the protection of health and safety of persons and of domestic animals and the protection of property, Reference is made to the safety requirements of ‘Directive 2014/35’ (Low Voltage Directive) and to the electromagnetic compatibility levels of ‘Directive 2014/30’ (EMC Directive). Furthermore, equipment construction is to both effectively use and support the efficient use of radio spectrum in order to avoid harmful interference. Radio equipment interworking with accessories or networks or the support of specific features are addressed by the ‘Essential Requirements’ as well. Article 9 ‘Free movement of Radio Equipment’ ensures the making available of compliant radio equipment on the EU market, as far as concerning aspects covered by this Directive. Further Directive articles describe e.g. ‘Registration of radio equipment types within some categories’ (Article 5) or the required ‘Technical documentation’ (Article 21). *Source: ‘Directive 2014/53 on the harmonization of the laws of the Member States relating to the making available on the market of radio equipment’; (6).
