European Union (EU) 'Directive 2014/30 on electromagnetic compatibility'
EMC conformity assessment and certification in the European Union
The European Union (EU) ‘Directive 2014/30 on the harmonization of the laws of the Member States relating to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)’ establishes rules for the electromagnetic disturbance generation and disturbance immunity of electrical or electronic equipment. Per scope definition, the Directive applies to any apparatus or fixed installation. ‘Apparatus’ refers to end-user appliances (or combinations of such) working as a ‘single functional unit, liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance, or the performance of which is liable to be affected by such disturbance’*. ‘Fixed installations’ are determined by a ‘particular combination of several types of apparatus and, where applicable, other devices, which are assembled, installed and intended to be used permanently at a predefined location’*. Exemptions apply for e.g. aeronautical products, specific radio equipment, or equipment with minor electromagnetic emissions. Annex I of the Directive stipulates ‘essential requirements’ for equipment with regard to the electromagnetic disturbance generated and the level of immunity to electromagnetic disturbance in its intended use.* *Source: Directive 2014/30 on the harmonization of the laws of the Member States relating to electromagnetic compatibility, Article 3.1.(2) and (3), Annex I / 1.
