‘Directive 2014/34/EU of the European Parliament and of the council on the harmonisation of the laws of the Member States relating to equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres’ (ATEX Directive) is applicable to products made available and put into service on the European market. The directive does not apply e.g. to seagoing vessels and further means of transport. While Annex I of the Directive specifies criteria determining the classification of equipment-groups into categories, Annex II stipulates mandatory ‘Essential health and safety requirements’ relating to the design and construction’* of products. Annexes II to IX describe the relevant conformity assessment procedures. Manufacturers are responsible for the selection of the appropriate conformity assessment procedure.
