In the top 5% of companies operating sustainably and with "excellent" climate awareness: the sustainability performance from TÜV Rheinland

EcoVadis awarded TÜV Rheinland with the coveted ‘gold status’ on their sustainability rating index. At the same time, it was ranked by the business magazine ‘Capital’ as one of the top 100 companies in Germany with the highest level of climate awareness. TÜV Rheinland will continue to resolutely follow this course into the future.

TÜV Rheinland is on the right track with its focus on corporate social responsibility (CSR). This was acknowledged by the EcoVadis rating agency: TÜV Rheinland achieved gold status in the EcoVadis rating (previously silver) in October 2021. This places TÜV Rheinland among the top five percent of globally rated companies.

Internationally Recognized Sustainability Criteria

With more than 90,000 companies of all sizes and industries now rated, EcoVadis is the world's leading provider of sustainability rankings . The EcoVadis rating examines 21 sustainability criteria, including the areas of environment, labor practices and human rights, fair business practices and sustainable procurement. The sustainability criteria are based on international CSR standards such as the ten principles of the UN Global Compact and the conventions of the International Labor Organization (ILO).

Incentive for Sustainability and Corporate Goals

For TÜV Rheinland, the award is a motivating affirmation of its intention to continue on the path chosen for its Sustainability Strategy 2025 . "With the gold status, we are closing the gap to competitors listed on the stock exchange in the assessment of our sustainability performance. This brings us closer to our goal of being the world's best sustainable and independent service organization for testing, certification, consulting and training – in line with our mission statement," explained Dr. Achim Ernst, Global Officer Corporate Development responsible for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at TÜV Rheinland.

An Important Aspect of our Sustainability: High Climate Awareness

In addition to global sustainability activities in our business practices, we contribute to climate protection, which is a priority for our planet. To this end, TÜV Rheinland recently became the only testing service provider to be included in the list of "Germany's climate-conscious companies." For the ranking, the renowned business magazine "Capital" and the data portal Statista compared how successfully German companies are able to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to the reduction of direct emissions from our service processes and indirect emissions through energy consumption, additional criteria were included in the assessment – such as if a CO₂ report has been in place since 2015 or if emissions data is collected from suppliers. With a reduction in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions of 13.55 percent from 2015 to 2020, TÜV Rheinland achieved 90th place in the ranking. This is a good start, which we will pursue with our current Sustainability Strategy 2025. Our declared goal is to contribute to the 1,5 degree target path and to define science-based targets (acc. to SBTi; Science Based Targets Initiative) to reduce GHG emissions.

In the Top Five Percent for Sustainability

"In both rankings, we are among the top five percent of the companies surveyed. That shows: At TÜV Rheinland, we take sustainability seriously. We understand the topic fully and consider both the environmental and the social and governance sectors," said Achim Ernst. "With concrete measures in all three areas, we want to make an even greater contribution to achieving the United Nations' sustainability goals going forward."
