Safe Food Packaging

Safety and conformity for your food packaging

During storage, the packaging acts as a kind of “second skin” for the food. This means that the food comes into direct contact with plastics, adhesives, inks and more. As a packaging manufacturer, you must ensure that at no time do any harmful substances pass into the food. If this were to happen, it would pose a health risk to consumers and could potentially result in additional costs and reputational damage for your company.

The extraordinarily wide variety of substances used in modern food packaging today makes it even harder for a manufacturer to ensure that they are safe. No matter how carefully you select raw materials, components, and production processes: It takes a lot of effort to keep track of changes to substances or materials along the complex international supply chains.

Another challenge is the vast and constantly changing regulatory landscape. For many materials, there are country-specific requirements that are continuously updated to reflect current scientific developments. The required content of a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) is also subject to change. Only very few manufacturers can afford to keep up to date with these requirements on their own.

With our chemical testing and our DoC Management Services, we will gladly take these worries off your plate.

Residual risk from NIAS: Testing is essential, even for plastic products with compliant formulations

Two laboratory technicians in lab coats and safety goggles perform tests for non-intentionally added substances

In addition to the technically required and approved substances, food contact materials and products can also contain non-intentionally added substances (NIAS). Under certain circumstances, those can migrate into food. The chemical synthesis of raw materials on the positive list (Annex I and II of EU Regulation No. 10/2011) alone can result in impurities in these chemicals. NIAS can also appear at any stage of the value chain, e.g. during production or recycling, but also during transport and storage. They can be any type of substances – including those that are potentially hazardous to consumers.

No matter at what stage of the supply chain NIAS enter a product or are formed – as a manufacturer or distributor, you are responsible for ensuring that your products are not harmful to health.

NIAS testing is particularly recommended when

  • introducing new products
  • implementing new production methods
  • changing a supplier
  • using modified packaging
  • entering new markets

Our NIAS testing includes

NIAS screening tests

Take your responsibility seriously: With our NIAS tests, which are based on a comprehensive list of substances, we use cutting-edge analysis methods to detect substances that migrate from a material.

NIAS identification

Our state-of-the-art tests provide a comprehensive analysis of NIAS. The comparison against the substances in our substance database reliably detects, identifies and quantifies NIAS where technically possible.

Specific toxicological classification of substances

If there is no official limit value for a substance, a toxicological risk assessment is the logical next step. Thanks to our in-house expertise, we can classify and evaluate most of the identified substances using internationally recognized scientific methods. A toxicological risk assessment provides information on the potential health hazards of the identified NIAS.

This is how you benefit from NIAS testing

Brands and retail

Your products are inseparably linked to your good name. With our NIAS testing, you eliminate the risks of unwanted substances in your FCM and protect the consumer and therefore the good reputation of your brand.

Packaging manufacturers

As the link between suppliers of raw materials and the marketable product, you have a particular responsibility. With our NIAS testing, you are on the safe side and protect yourself against recourse claims and loss of reputation.

Manufacturers of intermediates

Lasting, profitable business relationships are built on trust, for which our NIAS testing provides a solid basis. Win the trust of your business partners with test results from an experienced and accredited provider like TÜV Rheinland.

DoC management: A key component of your risk management

A man and a woman on a PC preparing a Declaration of Conformity.

Whether required by law or by your business partners, you often need a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) for materials and items that are intended to come into contact with food. With your DoC, you verify that all components and production steps comply with the relevant legal requirements, and you therefore ensure the safety of your products.

Preparing a correct DoC for FCM can be very complex. A major challenge is that as a manufacturer or distributor, you not only have to provide verification for your own production steps, but also for the contributions of your suppliers, who may be located all around the world.

With the DoC, you provide verification to the next user of a specific FCM in the supply chain that you comply with the applicable regulations. You are required to supply the relevant information to enable the next user to produce a safe and compliant FCM. Documentation at every stage of the supply chain is a prerequisite for a realistic assessment of the final product.

We support you with this complex task. With our professional DoC management, we ensure that your DoC meets all requirements. Depending on your needs, you may choose the following services as individual services or in combination as a package:

  • Request for information from suppliers
  • Document review and theoretical calculation
  • Laboratory tests
  • DoC service/preparation of a DoC template according to current specifications

Our DoC Management Service includes

Testing for substances

The more you know, the better you can respond: Our laboratory testing detects any non-compliant substances and forms the basis for a comprehensive risk assessment.

DoC review

With our expert DoC review, you ensure that your Declaration of Conformity meets the legal requirements.

Obtaining relevant supplier information

As an independent testing body, we collect information from your suppliers. They are often more willing to share confidential data with a neutral third party.

How do you benefit from a DoC review?

Brands and retail

A DoC creates security and transparency in the supply chain. If you have it in writing that your products comply with current EU law, you are on the safe side.

Manufacturers

One single point of contact for all matters related to a DoC: We test all FCM materials (plastics, paper, glass, metals, ceramics, renewable raw materials, etc.). Use our DoC templates to complement your technical documentation.

Manufacturers of intermediates

With a professional and legally compliant DoC, you are able to develop new markets and business relationships. We provide you with competent support – anywhere in the world.

Secure your safety package!

You can request our DoC Management Services either individually or in attractive packages at fair prices. We conduct a professional review of one DoC for as little as 180 euros, and you benefit from a package price of 350 euros for five documents. Contact us for a DoC review by our experts!

Additional chemical testing for FCM

Food contact materials often have specific chemical and physical properties. If individual substances migrate into the food, this could pose a health risk. Our chemical tests give you a clear picture of the substances

PFAS

Useful, but highly controversial

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are chemicals found in many nonstick coatings and in products that are water-, oil-, or stain-resistant. Choose from a variety of test packages and request testing with just a few clicks.

MOSH/MOAH

Strictly controlled

A variety of materials, e.g. printing inks, may contain mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH and MOAH). These are suspected to be harmful to the health of consumers. Benefit from our analytical services to ensure the highest level of safety for your products.
