Chemical Safety for Clothing and Textiles

Our testing services along the entire supply chain

Textiles, footwear, and leather goods – in 2022, the textile industry generated about $1.45 trillion in sales worldwide and can be optimistic about its prospects. Yet at the same time, major brands and retailers are facing criticism in their sales markets. Reports of the use of hazardous chemicals, which end up in the environment, or inadequate social practices among international suppliers have raised alarms in the media, and among legislators and consumers.

Brands and retailers are, of course, very aware of the quality of their products and are proactively engaged in optimizing their supply chains. Initiatives such as the ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) have been striving for years to ban harmful chemicals from the industry and to increase the chemical safety of textiles, footwear, and leather goods.

The creation of the ZDHC also established new standards. TÜV Rheinland has been involved in the initiative for years, offering testing and certification services to support companies in the textile industry. Of course, we also keep track of the requirements of the new "Roadmap to Zero" program. In addition, we offer innovative solutions for the management of your supply chains.

Our experts for chemical testing and certification of products made in the textile industry will be happy to provide you with more information about our services.

ZDHC: An initiative for sustainable chemical management in the clothing and footwear industry

The ZDHC is a coalition of more than 170 international companies and organizations working together to eliminate hazardous chemicals from the textile industry. Over the years, these organizations have developed or supported their own initiatives. They were instrumental in the "DETOX" program initiated by Greenpeace and are currently following the "Roadmap to Zero" and other quality standards. With our expertise in chemical testing and certification, TÜV Rheinland has been providing services to support the initiative for many years.

The work of the ZDHC is now more relevant than ever, because consumers and legislators alike are calling for the restructuring of supply chains to make the production more sustainable. The ZDHC has therefore expanded its activities in recent years.

REACH update: Chemical safety of tomorrow

The European Union Regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals – REACH Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 – has been in effect for more than 15 years. REACH fundamentally harmonized the previous legislation on chemicals. However, as announced in the EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability, the European Commission has started to revise the REACH Regulation. With the next update of the regulation, experts expect a paradigm shift, which will have a significant impact on the industry.

Thanks to our extensive network, we keep track of the European Commission's plans. Contact us now to be prepared for upcoming changes. Or visit our Services website to find out more about our services related to REACH.
