Vehicle inspection is a vehicle safety and technical inspection, vehicle emissions inspection, vehicle comprehensive performance inspection of three types of inspection activities collectively.

Vehicle safety inspection: According to the "People's Republic of Road Traffic Safety Law" and its implementing regulations, in accordance with national safety and technical standards for motor vehicles and other requirements, the vehicle on the road for inspection activities, including vehicle registration inspection and in-use motor vehicle inspection.

Comprehensive vehicle performance inspection: According to the "Road Transport Vehicle Management Regulations", in accordance with the standards and specifications set by the competent department of transport under the State Council, the vehicle dynamics, safety, fuel economy, reliability, exhaust pollutants and noise, as well as the integrity and state of the vehicle equipment and a combination of a variety of technical performance testing activities.

On May 26, 2020, the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration (National Standardization Administration) approved GB38900-2020 "Motor Vehicle Safety Technical Inspection Items and Methods" mandatory national standard, the standard was officially implemented on January 1, 2021. GB38900-2020 replaces GB21861-2014 "Motor Vehicle Safety Technical Inspection Items and Methods and GB18565-2016 "Comprehensive Performance Requirements and Test Methods for Road Transport Vehicles" standards.
