The initiative focuses on actively developing and engaging sustainable solutions
Taking on responsibility matters to us – for people, society and the environment. We are committed. We provide our employees with an attractive and safe place to work. We make technology controllable and secure, so that people can use it without harming the environment.
We – that’s the employees of TÜV Rheinland. The concept of sustainability is anchored in our Mission Statement to enable everyone to integrate sustainable values and initiatives into their daily work.
We call for green ideas and go green step by step.
We believe that every employee can play a great part in building an eco-friendlier workspace and support TÜV Rheinland in becoming a carbon neutral company.
Our steps—
In 2010, TÜV Rheinland Greater China launched the “Green Hero” campaign, a call for green ideas for a greener company. This campaign effectively increased employee awareness about eco-friendly issues, and our employees showed tremendous enthusiasm. Furthermore, we integrated some of the winning ideas into a series of “Go Green” initiatives to demonstrate how our carbon footprint could be reduced in the office.
All of our offices have adopted the “Save Paper” action since its introduction in May 2011. Nonessential documents should now be printed double-sided, and recycled paper should be used when printing draft documents. This policy reinforces TÜV Rheinland’s determination to become greener.
Furthermore, from May to June 2011, we launched another fun campaign known as “Discover Your Green City”. This photo contest not only increased our colleagues’ understanding of the eight types of green services we offer, but also engaged them to discover regional green initiatives that benefited our services.
In 2012, we initiated the “Green Tips” activity and opened a forum on Blueye for employees to share their ideas.
In 2013, we kicked off the “2013 Environmental Target Programme”, which set energy saving targets for office energy consumption related to electricity, water, paper, waste and travel. Every office has taken action to renovate and train employees according to their particular situations.
Fully support protection of the marine environment
On 22 October, 2011,TÜV Rheinland Hong Kong participated in the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) 2011 campaign on St Stepan’s Beach. Mr Ralf Scheller, President and CEO of TÜV Rheinland Greater China, and Mr Lutz Frankholz, COO of Hong Kong office, led our colleagues and their families in collecting 18 bags of trash weighing over 90kg. The International Coastal Cleanup, organised by the Green Council, encourages people to remove trash and debris from the world’s beaches and waterways, identifies the sources of debris and changes behavioural patterns that contribute to pollution. Marine debris is a serious and escalating problem in marine and coastal environments worldwide, and Hong Kong’s waters and coasts have not escaped this problem. We fully support the protection of the marine environment and encourage our colleagues to participate in volunteer activities.
On 29 October, 2011, over 60 TÜV Rheinland colleagues and their families gathered on Rose Coast Beach in Shenzhen on a sunny afternoon for the 2011 Beach Clean-up Day in Shenzhen. The European Chamber, a co-organiser this year, called on its members to join the important event, which is estimated to have attracted approximately 500 people this year. TÜV Rheinland Greater China Vice President Holger Kunz, as Chairman of the European Chamber – Pearl River Delta Chapter, also joined the vow-taking at the opening ceremony and participated in the action alongside the other TÜV Rheinland volunteers. Together, they removed the equivalent of 20 bags of trash from the 1500-meter long white sand beach.
